Gratitude from Markey Culver, Founder and CEO
Thank you for seeing in The Women’s Bakery what I see: an organization that empowers women and nourishes communities.
What began in 2014 in Rwanda with little more than pots and stones has grown into three fully equipped commercial bakeries. These bakeries are production hubs, community anchors, and gateways to opportunity for women.
We invest in every team member through education, technical training, and meaningful employment, helping women build better futures for themselves and their families. We ensure women never have to choose between work and caring for their children via a “Baby House,” an onsite daycare, so mothers can work knowing their children are safe and supported.
We also invest in our communities through the One Bread Project (OBP). We launched OBP in 2019 serving just 400 kids a day. Each year, you helped us grow our capacities to serve more children. In 2025, TWB was serving over 20,000 elementary school children every day, ensuring students begin their school days nourished.
What began as a simple idea has grown into a living network of possibilities. And my hope is that ten years from now, TWB will be proving that women-centered bakeries drive economic mobility and food security at scale.
Bread is so simple, and yet the outcomes are complex and enduring. Because of one woman’s job, a family never went to bed hungry. Because of one bakery, children go to and stay in school. And because of your leap of faith and investment in us, The Women’s Bakery is proving every day that bread really does have the power to change the world.
