Annual Foundational Financial Literacy Training

We began Phase 1 of our financial literacy training in Rwanda for our newest team members in August. Conducted in-house at our Musanze and Kigali bakeries, the training supported 25 team members in building foundational skills they can use to manage their finances and plan for the future.

The training focused on five key areas:

  • Budgeting

  • Financial decision-making

  • Saving

  • Responsible borrowing

  • Awareness of financial resources and opportunities

Team members were introduced to a monthly budget tool designed to help them organize and monitor their finances. Through hands-on budgeting exercises, they learned how to align spending with their actual income, distinguish between essential and non-essential expenses, and identify opportunities to prioritize saving. The goal is to provide practical tools that team members can continue using to make informed financial decisions based on their household needs and available resources.

To measure changes in financial knowledge, team members completed an assessment before and after the training. We saw a 32.5 percentage-point improvement in financial knowledge following the training. While this immediate improvement is encouraging, our ultimate goal is to support long-term behavior change. We will continue offering annual training sessions that respond to the evolving needs of our team members.

We’re also excited to build on this foundation with our bakers who have already completed the introductory training. Their next training will focus on entrepreneurship and will be led by an external trainer who has worked with TWB bakers in the past.

We look forward to continuing to invest in the financial empowerment of our team!
