Happy International Women's Month!

Happy International Women’s Month

Born out of the work of labor movements across Europe and North America in the late twentieth century, International Women’s Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977. Each year, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th, though now, the festivities have expanded throughout the month of March. In addition to uplifting women, the events surrounding this month aim to create a call to action, promote philanthropy, and promote collaboration. This year’s theme is #ChooseToChallenge, which is centered on the idea that change comes from challenges.

At The Women’s Bakery, we kicked off the month by taking the pledge to #ChooseToChallenge. This means that we are committed to raising awareness against gender bias and taking action against inequality by empowering #StrongWomen in East Africa and around the world. We choose to celebrate women’s achievements and create a more inclusive community for all to coexist in. We are passionate about advancing women’s equity in the workplace and beyond. Our bakers in Gicumbi even received a special surprise from their partners on March 8th - Charlotte, our Gicumbi Program Manager was able to arrange for the husbands to bring our #StrongWomenBakingBread flowers! The day was finished off by celebrating with Fantas.

In addition to #TeamTWB, we would like to give a special shoutout to all of the strong women supporting The Women’s Bakery across the globe. We are honored by the outpour of support we have seen for The Women’s Bakery on social media so far this month. We are so grateful for the community of women that have spread the word about our mission and that have contributed to our successes financially over the years. Thank YOU for joining us in celebrating the power of women and for choosing to challenge the status quo!
