Becoming a "Superhero Mom"

“In Our Words”

Charlotte, Gicumbi Program Manager

“There is much I can speak to about the life-changing impact that women experience after joining The Women’s Bakery. For me, the most powerful experience has been the role I now play in the eyes of my fellow women and, most importantly, in the eyes of my 5-year-old daughter, Teta. Teta calls me  a ‘Superhero Mom.’ She tells me she wants to go to work when she grows  up and be able to bring her baby to work with her and take care of her family, as I do. This makes my heart swell with pride and happiness.  Most women in the community don’t have the opportunities I’ve had thanks to being employed at The Women’s Bakery. Not only do I have a  steady salary doing something I love, but I continue to learn and grow.  I started as a bakery manager three years ago, and I’ve since gained skills  and competencies that have helped me to grow. I’m now a Program  Manager and a leader within a respected organization.

One of our strong women bakers who inspires me is Claudine.  Before joining The Women’s Bakery three years ago, Claudine did not have steady employment and worked odd jobs as she could. Her six children suffered from malnutrition at the time. Now, Claudine is a  strong woman baker who can provide for her family. Her children are  healthy, and she can afford to send them to school.

This is huge for women in Rwanda. As TWB continues to grow,  and especially as the Gicumbi Bakery nears profitability by the end of  2021, I hope to make this type of life impact a reality for more women.”
